Cold-water immersion has comparatively substantial human research support for reducing perceived muscle soreness after strenuous exercise. Effects on strength recovery, performance and long-term training adaptation are less consistent and depend on temperature, timing, duration and the type of exercise performed.
Short-term relief and long-term training adaptation are different questions.
